The Book
Of Pattern Reading,
Writing, And Singing Activities
(218
pages)
Description
This “assembly” component of Animated-Literacy™ helps students isolate,
manipulate, and combine letter sounds and words to sing and rewrite
favorite pattern songs and stories. The teacher introduces each activity
by reading aloud to the class. The first activities help students
substitute the sound of each alphabet character for selected sounds in
key words to form silly syllables and words. Example: In the
song, “Are You Sleeping,” students replace the “D” in “ding,
dong, ding” to form other bell tones (ping, pong, ring, rong, ching,
chong, etc.).
The pattern activities expand from sound manipulation and substitution
to word manipulation and substitution once two sounds (“P” and “U”) have
been introduced and the students begin to draw and label objects. After
learning to draw and label a pup, the students use the word, pup, to
replace key words in selected songs. Examples: When the word
“bus” in the song Wheels On The Bus is replaced with “pup,” the
students use their editing skills to find and correct any mismatches.
After replacing the word, wheels, with the parts of a pup (nose,
tail, paws) students decide how the parts might move and new verses are
formed. (The tail on the pup goes wag, wag, wag.) In A-Hunting We
Will Go, students rhyme with the word, pup. (We'll catch a pup and
put him in a cup.) Gradually, students move from noun substitution to
substituting for adjectives and verbs, and then on to other parts of
speech.
