The Animated-Alphabet
Story, Song, And Action Book
(348 pages)
The Animated-Alphabet Story, Song, And Action Book introduces
the sounds, letters, and letter patterns needed to read and write in
English through 45 Animated-Alphabet characters, gestures, stories, and
songs. Each character and sound is introduced in association with books
that the teacher reads aloud to the students. Books are chosen to relate
to the characters, settings, problems, actions, and feelings depicted in
the alphabet characters’ stories and songs. After the students hear and
participate in the reading of related literature and the telling of an
alphabet character’s story, they learn to perform a gesture from the
alphabet character’s story while producing the character’s sound
(painting with Polly Panda for the sound of “P,” pointing up to Uncle
Upton for the sound of short “U,” rowing a boat with Old Joe Crow for
the sound of long “O,” and hanging from Arnie Aardvark’s high bar with
one arm for the sound of “AR”). Students then gesture and sing along
with songs that provide frequent repetition of each alphabet character’s
sound and retell the characters’ stories.
The alphabet character component of Animated-Literacy helps students:
(1) learn to recognize, isolate, and produce the sounds of English while
performing gestures that bring meaning and enjoyment to each sound, (2)
learn to access prior knowledge to predict and comprehend the events in
a story, (3) develop an awareness of story structure and sequence, (4)
increase their listening and speaking vocabularies, (5) develop
listening comprehension and participation skills, and (6) develop print
awareness by locating letters and tracking the words to the alphabet
characters’ songs. |
